Hi, I am currently travelling abroad for a few month and most of the time I am not using my Simyo SIM card. I am wondering in order to keep the SIM card active, is it sufficient to insert it in my phone and receive a few text messages from time to time, or do I have to make outgoing call or send text messages?

You have to make an outgoing call or send an SMS. Basically anything that affects the amount of money on there counts. Adding money to it counts. Ordering a data-bundle counts.
Sending a single SMS is of course cheapest to do, but those last 2 options would also work and they do not require your sim card to work/connect.
