Why do i have unexpected internet charge outside the bundle for €100,-?

Dear Simyo,

I am contacting you because I am extremely disappointed about being charged more than €100 in internet costs after my data bundle was used up. I received a single SMS in Dutch, and immediately afterwards you started charging me — in very strange increments of 59 MB at a time. This does not feel transparent or customer-friendly in any way.

These charges are completely disproportionate, and I am not at all satisfied with how this was handled. Because of this experience, I intend to switch to another provider as soon as possible.

I urgently request the following:

1. A clear explanation of why these charges were applied in this way,

2. A suitable solution, such as crediting (part of) these unexpected costs,

3. Or, if no solution is offered, clear instructions on how to terminate my contract immediately without additional fees.

I expect this matter to be taken seriously, and I look forward to your prompt response.

Kind regards,

Marco

Hello @Marco Tibaldi,

Thank you for your message. I understand that you are a bit shocked about these high costs.

I see that you already got good information from @Groentjuh!

Can you send me a private message with your personal information? Then i can see if there is something we can do about the costs.

Greetings,
Amy

I can just quote the Simyo sim-only page:

Out-of-bundle costs

At Simyo, you pay € 0.31 cents per minute or SMS when you have run out of minutes and therefore call outside your bundle. If you don't have an internet bundle or have you used up your data, you pay € 0.15 per MB. If your internet bundle runs out, you can buy additional MBs of data in Mijn Simyo. 500 MB will cost € 5.

That is what happened. You ran out of data within your bundle. The SMS warned you about that and after that, Simyo started charging you € 0.15 per MB. You do apparently not have a dataplafond, which would prevented you from being able to use internet when your data bundle runs out. You can likely add that for next month. It costs 0,50 euro/month.

The ~60MB increments is because the network groups together data usage in blocks of 8 hours or 60MB. That's just how systems work.

These charges are completely disproportionate, and I am not at all satisfied with how this was handled. Because of this experience, I intend to switch to another provider as soon as possible.

You signed up for these rates. Yes, they are high. Either do not exceed your data bundle or have a dataplafond.

I urgently request the following:

1. A clear explanation of why these charges were applied in this way,

As a helpful customer, I gave you that.

2. A suitable solution, such as crediting (part of) these unexpected costs,

3. Or, if no solution is offered, clear instructions on how to terminate my contract immediately without additional fees.

Simyo will not allow early terminations because you exceeded your data bundle. Whenever or not compensation in any form is possible only a Simyo Moderator (= Simyo employee) can decide.

I expect this matter to be taken seriously, and I look forward to your prompt response.

To be honest, your post has what I would say: A “high karen”-level. Simyo just does follow the rules in the agreement between you and them. I would suggest making some afford to knowing those rules.

Thanks for your reply @Groentjuh. Calling a customer’s legitimate concern “high Karen-level” doesn’t really help the discussion. I’m pointing out a lack of transparency, and considering how many other users have mentioned the exact same issue, it’s clearly not just a matter of me “not knowing the rules.”

Also, charging customers €0.50 per month just to activate a basic safety cap isn’t exactly standard practice. My Italian provider applies a data stop automatically at no extra cost. That’s what I’d call customer-friendly, but maybe that’s just my wild “Karen energy” speaking. Sorry if I’m not all sunshine and smiles while being hit with a €100 bill out of nowhere. Most people wouldn’t be.

On a positive note, I do want to thank @Amy from customer service for responding quickly, finding a solution, and handling everything in a kind and professional way. It’s appreciated and I will stick to Simyo.

I’m pointing out a lack of transparency, and considering how many other users have mentioned the exact same issue, it’s clearly not just a matter of me “not knowing the rules.”

So where would they need to state it to be transparent? On the page to order sim only, there is a question “Would you like a data cap?” with a additional information button stating:

With a data cap you can browse worry-free without constantly checking your bundle. It automatically stops when your internet bundle is used up. Without a data cap, you can continue browsing at full speed, but you'll be charged € 0.15 per MB once your bundle is depleted.

If you were to check "Pricing” of sim only on that same page (FAQ):

Out-of-bundle costs

At Simyo, you pay € 0.31 cents per minute or SMS when you have run out of minutes and therefore call outside your bundle. If you don't have an internet bundle or have you used up your data, you pay € 0.15 per MB.

Or on the “tarieven”-page:

Wat gebeurt er als mijn bundel op is?

Als je bundel op is in zone 1, dan maak je gebruik van het EU-buitenbundeltarief van € 0,23 per minuut, € 0,07 per sms en € 0,15 per MB. Dit geldt dus ook in Nederland. Is je internetbundel (bijna) op? Dan kan je extra MB’s kopen via Mijn Simyo of de Mijn Simyo app. Net zoals in Nederland.

There is an entire page regarding that data-cap.

The warning SMS-message you receive when you use up your data bundle tell you that as well.

And it is likely infinite times on the forums… And likely dozens of other places I could likely find it. (Like the out-of-bundle customer support page.)

So is Simyo really not transparent regarding those out-of-bundle costs? It's not like it is only stated in some deeply hidden PDF (But yes, it is in there as well). What place should they have put it for you to have noticed it?

Also, charging customers €0.50 per month just to activate a basic safety cap isn’t exactly standard practice. My Italian provider applies a data stop automatically at no extra cost. That’s what I’d call customer-friendly, but maybe that’s just my wild “Karen energy” speaking. Sorry if I’m not all sunshine and smiles while being hit with a €100 bill out of nowhere. Most people wouldn’t be.

Many budget providers in The Netherlands do charge for these type of options. These are the options they strip to make them budget. I agree, they should have just increased the prices by 0,50€/month and enabled it. (And possible using customer support have an option to disable the datacap and get 0,50€/month discount 😉)
