Unexpectedly high bill for data usage, what now?

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding my latest bill, which includes a €483.47 charge ( still increasing even if I turned the airplane mode on) for out-of-bundle data usage.
As an international student new to the Netherlands, I barely understand the app and had no idea that exceeding my data limit would cost this much. If I had known that the rate was €146 per GB, I would have never used mobile data at all.

 

What makes this even more confusing is that when I first noticed the high charge (around €490), I immediately panicked and switched my phone to airplane mode. However, despite this, my bill still increased by another €120, even though I wasn’t using any data at that point. Now it is of 610€. This seems very strange, and I don’t understand how I could have been charged for data usage when my phone was completely disconnected from mobile networks.

 

I sincerely apologize for this mistake—I never intended to incur such extreme charges. I truly thought I was only using a small amount of extra data, and I assumed that if the costs were this high, I would have been given a much clearer warning. I am begging you to reconsider this charge, as it is impossible for me to pay such an amount.

 

I have now learned that you offer 500MB for €5 as a bundle, which is much more reasonable. Since my overage was around 3.3GB, I kindly and urgently request the possibility of applying these bundles retroactively instead of the out-of-bundle rate. This would bring my cost down to €35, which is still a lot for me, but at least something I could manage.

 

Please, I truly did not understand what was happening, and I will be much more careful in the future. If there is any way to adjust this bill, I would be extremely grateful. I am willing to take any necessary steps to ensure this never happens again.

Thank you for your message. I'm sorry to hear that you incurred charges outside your bundle due to internet usage! 

We always send warning messages at 80% and 100% usage of your data bundle. These text messages come directly from the network and are always leading. In the last text message we also clearly indicate what the tariff is from that moment on (€0.15 per MB) and that it is wise to turn off the internet or to buy an internet bundle. From Simyo, we do our best to warn our customers in time. If you have incurred high costs outside your bundle within a short period of time, we will block your SIM card as a precaution and send an e-mail about this. 

We recently introduced the option to enable a data cap for €0.50 cents per month. This will prevent you from incurring charges outside your bundle again due to internet usage. We have also created a topic on the forum with detailed information about the data cap. You can activate the data cap through Mijn Simyo.

I understand that the costs were not made deliberately. Can you send me a private message with your 06 number and personal details? I'd be happy to see what we can do for you to resolve this together.
