Unacceptable and unjustified data charges abroad. How is this possible?

Dear Simyo customer service,

I would like to formally contest the data charges I was charged after turning off my airplane mode while abroad.

Within one minute of receiving your text message that I was abroad, I received a notification that I had exceeded my bundle by €40, followed by a notification that I had exceeded my bundle by €60 less than a minute later. This while I was trying to make the switch to the new sim i got to use abroad during my trip. So this did not take more than 15 seconds!

It is technically impossible to use more than 10MB in these circumstances without actively using my device, so I urge you to correct these charges.

Hi @Manhal,

Thanks for your message. I can imagine that you were shocked by these costs.

Unfortunately, when travelling abroad, turning on your internet after landing could cause data usage. This is due to apps that refresh in the background (think of all the notifications you received when you turned back your internet) To avoid this, you could turn off the option '’Roaming'’.

At Simyo we will always send you a warning message. The app is not always in sync with your actual usage, but the text messages we send are directly from the network and are the most accurate.  If you incur high costs outside your bundle within a short period of time outside of zone 1, we will block your SIM card as a precaution and send you an email about this. We try to block the SIM card from €60,50, but because usage is processed with a delay in our system, the costs can exceed €60,50 depending on how many MBs have been used.

It is important to know that as long as the internet connection on the SIM card is active, there is always a chance that data will be used, both consciously and unconsciously. This can happen, for example, through updates or applications that remain active in the background.

Of course, I understand that this was not intended on your part. This is why I would like to take a look at your subscription with you. Can you send me a private message? Then I can ask you for some personal information.

Greetings,
Seren
