Why is this charge so high?

Hi Simyo,

I just got an email about my usage and I’m honestly shocked. I’m an international exchange student here for only 5 months, and this bill is completely unrealistic for me.

The charges happened during an actual emergency. I was detained at passport control over a residence permit issue with the IND and was at risk of being deported. I panicked because I had a one-hour layover and was about to miss my flight. I had to text a friend to get help—calls weren't even working.

What really makes me angry is the data charge. I had my roaming OFF. But because I had to toggle Airplane Mode to get a signal for the emergency texts, the phone apparently leaked a tiny bit of data in that split second. How is it possible to be charged this much for a "split second" of a connection I didn't even want?

I didn't see any warnings, and the messages I get from you are in Dutch, which I don't speak. I had no idea the rates were this insane or that the internet wouldn't just cut off automatically.

I’m on a strict student budget and there is no way I can pay this. This was a one-time emergency and a total misunderstanding of how the Dutch system works. I’ve already turned everything off in the app now so it never happens again.

Can someone please look into this?

Hi @Delta_Sierra,

Thank you for your message. I’m sorry to hear that charges were incurred outside your bundle. I can imagine this has been frustrating for you, especially during an emergency situation. That is of course not our intention.

It appears that most of the charges were caused by data usage abroad (zone 2).

When you are in a country outside zone 1, data usage is billed at the applicable out-of-bundle rate. In some cases, warnings may arrive slightly later because the data usage can take time to reach us. This means that charges may be incurred before you receive the SMS alert. You can find more information about rates abroad here: Bellen en internetten in het buitenland. Because rates outside the EU are higher, even a short period of data usage can lead to significant costs.

If you travel outside the EU in the future, you can use an international bundle if you wish. More information about this can be found here: Simyo Buitenlandbundels

I would like to look into this further and check with the relevant department internally to see what options are possible for a suitable solution. Could you please send me your phone number and personal details via a private message? Then I can assist you further.

Greetings,
Sedat

This is crazy now. The sim was blocked by the company itself. But they added another 5.08 today for calls from abroad for a blocked sim. Whats your explanation now?

I paid my plan money already. But this is crazy. Charging customer who are new to the country's rules, and adding charges to a blocked sim?

And also not replying to the private chat.

Hi @Delta_Sierra,

I can imagine that this situation is confusing. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

I have already replied to your private message. Could you please continue the conversation there? That way, we can review your details and look together at what exactly happened with the charges and the blocking of the SIM card.

Greetings,
Sedat
