Unexpected automatic data renewals resulted in extra charges

Hello,

I would like to ask for assistance regarding a very large and unexpected charge on my Simyo invoice.

I currently have a subscription with:

  • Simyo 400
  • Internet Bundle 30 GB

My regular monthly subscription costs approximately €14.50. However, my invoice for May 2026 shows €179.42 in additional data-related charges, resulting in a total amount of €104.21.

I was very surprised when I discovered this invoice. I did not intentionally purchase such a large amount of additional data, nor was I aware that extra data renewals could accumulate to this level of cost within a single billing period.

I would therefore appreciate clarification regarding:

  1. The exact dates and times when the additional data renewals were activated.
  2. Whether any explicit confirmation or consent was required and recorded.
  3. What notifications, warnings, or alerts were sent before these charges accumulated.
  4. Whether there were any safeguards in place to help customers avoid unexpectedly high costs.

From a customer’s perspective, it is difficult to understand how a subscription that normally costs around €14.50 could lead to such a substantial increase in charges. I believe that a reasonable customer would not expect a monthly bill to increase by several hundred percent without clearly understanding that additional paid data bundles were being activated and generating extra costs.

As an international student, this amount represents a significant financial burden for me. Had I fully understood that these renewals would continue to generate charges of this magnitude, I would have taken immediate action to prevent them.

For this reason, I kindly ask Simyo to carefully review my case and consider whether these charges can be removed or waived as a gesture of goodwill. Given that the additional costs were not intentionally incurred and that I was genuinely unaware of how quickly they could accumulate, I would be extremely grateful if Simyo could make an exception and help resolve this situation by cancelling the extra charges in full.

I have always tried to use my subscription responsibly and would sincerely appreciate any support, understanding, or goodwill solution that Simyo can offer in this case.

Thank you for your message. I understand that you are shocked by these high costs! 

To avoid extra costs we always send two warning messages. One at 80% usage of the internetbundle and one when the internetbundle is fully used. If no action is taken after these messages and internet is registered on the simcard (consciously or unconsciously) you will pay €0,15 per MB. I recommend setting up a datalimit so that you won't face unexpected costs and the internet stops when your internetbundle runs out. You can turn on the datalimit in you Mijn Simyo account and starts the 1st day of the next month. I do see that we send the warning messages on 28 of may and 31 of may. 

Unfortunately, due to privacy legislation, we cannot see what the internet was actually used for. 

You can send me a private message with your personal information so i can have a look at the costs for you and tell you when the data exactly is used.
