Hi everyone,

I have a Dutch Simyo number and I am currently in the USA. WhatsApp (which has my Dutch number) asked me to verify my account, but the verification code is being sent by SMS to my Dutch number, and I am not receiving any messages as I’m outside of the Netherlands.

I saw that the USA bundle needs to be activated via SMS, normally before travelling from the Netherlands. Since I am already in the US and cannot receive SMS, I am not sure what my options are.

Is it still possible to activate roaming/USA bundle while abroad? Or is there anything I need to change in my Simyo settings to receive SMS in the US?

Thank you!

Hi @vanessa202601,

Thank you for your message. The USA bundle should indeed have been activated before leaving the Netherlands. Since you are already in the USA, your phone will first need to connect to a US mobile network. Please keep in mind that connecting to a foreign network can result in costs if you do not have the right bundle activated.

If possible, first connect your phone to a Wifi i network or hotspot and make sure mobile data in the Simyo app and roaming data is turned off. After that, you can enable roaming so your phone can connect to a US network. You can also manually select a network by following the steps in this link: https://www.simyo.nl/klantenservice/toestelhulp/netwerk-handmatig-selecteren

Once your phone is connected to a US network and you receive the SMS code from WhatsApp, you can turn your mobile data back on via your My Simyo account while connected to Wi-Fi or a hotspot.

I hope this helps! If it doesn’t work, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help you further.

Greetings,
Khadija

Hi everyone,

I currently have a Simyo Dutch number and I am temporarily in the United States for a few days. I will come back to the Netherlands in September, that’s why I’m paying my dutch number as always even though I can’t use it in the moment here in the US, as here I just had planned getting a cheap eSIM American number from Walmart.

Today though, WhatsApp (which has my Dutch number) requested that I verify my account and is sending the verification code to my Dutch Simyo number. Unfortunately, because again I’m outside the NL and didn’t add any bubble before leaving, I am not receiving any SMS messages or calls on this number while in the US.

I saw that Simyo does have USA included in one of the bundles, but that the USA bundle and roaming options seem to require activation via SMS instructions, and from what I understand this is normally done while still in the Netherlands before traveling, after which then you follow the instructions once you arrive in the destination country. Since I’m  already in the USA and currently cannot receive SMS messages on my Simyo number, I’m worried that I may now be stuck in a situation where I cannot receive the WhatsApp verification code or activate the necessary roaming options. WhatsApp literally has be block right now until I add the code.

So, my questions are:

  • Is it still possible to activate a USA bundle or international roaming after already arriving in the US?

  • Is receiving SMS messages in the US dependent on having a bundle active, or should SMS reception work regardless?

  • Are there any settings on my account or SIM that could prevent receiving SMS abroad?

  • Has anyone experienced this issue before and found a solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as at the moment I cannot access my WhatsApp account because the verification code is being sent to my Dutch number.

Thank you!

Go to a place in USA where you have WIFI since without WIFI you have no connection yet.

Now turn roaming on.

Turn Calling in and to other countries on.

Now you should be able to turn the bundle on too.

Good morning @vanessa202601 - Vanessa.

To receive sms messages abroad you go to (where WiFi is available) Settings in your my Simyo (app).

Turn on bellen in en naar het buitenland aswell internet in het buitenland.

Also turn on (data)roaming on your phone.

And don't forget the most important....

Enjoy your staying in the US! Have a nice time! 🐕

And yes, you can choose an internetbundle in the US

Hi @vanessa202601,

I would also like to mention that it’s best to keep one topic per subject, as this makes it easier to keep all information and replies together. I have therefore merged the two topics into one.
I’d also like to thank @Friesian and @drschrisjacobs1 for their helpful replies and tips!

Greetings,
